We expect our bodies to heal quickly and routinely, but healing is a complicated process. If a wound hasn’t healed in four weeks with standard medical care, it’s time to seek special treatment at the Advanced Wound Center, an outpatient service of Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Assessment

Overland Park Regional Medical Center can provide the skill and expertise to assess chronic, slow or non-healing wounds. Part of our assessment process may include:

Complete evaluation and medical history
Non-invasive vascular studies

This initial phase provides our team of specialists and healthcare professionals with the history behind the wound. From this base, we can implement an individualized treatment plan.

Treatment

The comprehensive treatment plan may contain a variety of methods to ensure a complete recovery. Some of these options include:

Bioengineered skin and collagen products
Biopsies
Debridement
Infection control
Topical dressings
Compression therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

We rely on proven and effective methods of treatment. Our front line treatment plans often negate the need for surgical intervention. The wound care team will train the patient and others caring for the wound as well as provide educational materials and resources related to prevention of wounds, nutritional information, hygiene and other key topics for the patient and other caregivers.

Surgery

Surgery is a last resort in any treatment plan. If surgery is necessary, our surgical specialists are skilled in techniques such as:

Revascularization (fixing blood pathways, such as vessels and arteries)
Skin grafting
Deep debridement

You can be sure of our technical skills and medical talents for surgical repair of chronic, slow or non-healing wounds.

Protection

During the healing process, your advanced wound care team will provide you with education and continuing care instructions to ensure a quick and healthy recovery. Some wounds may require a certain kind of dressing or bandage while others need a specific care schedule. Your healthcare staff will give you detailed directions and encourage you to ask questions regarding the care of your wound.

How can I take advantage of advanced wound care at Overland Park Regional Medical Center?
Your physician can refer you to our Advanced Wound Care program. Depending on your needs, you may see a variety of healthcare professionals weekly or bi-weekly until you begin to heal in line with the treatment plan. Most of our services are covered by Medicare.
